Understanding Gratitude
Gratitude, is the act of being Thank full for the things we have and an acknowledgment of the how the important things in life are serving us, our survival and our mental integrity.
Here’s a scientific Neurologic Effects of Gratitude.
Why Practice Gratitude?
Benefits of Gratitude: Why do we even need to be grateful in Life? The thing to wonder for most of us is that. We naturally own things that we didn’t ask for. We naturally Inherit certain things that are important such as, money, house, shelter, food, clothes etc. We often hear people tell us to be grateful for what we did not work hard for. Why do we need to he grateful anyway? here’s why it is extremely important, Let me tell you a story about me.I often for the longest time struggled in accepting my fate for whatever happens in life. I have struggled accepting The fact that things happened with me and to me were for a reason any good. My close ones tried making me understand that this isn’t the end of the world and things will get better, also that all of this is temporary.
So, out of many Things NOT to say to somebody that is struggling with mental breakdowns. The things my loved ones told me were definitely Harsh. But when I actually sat down and gave it a thought to reflect on ‘WHY’ is it that I’m struggling, what is the Root cause of this, I had to find out, Because I was so tired of being Unhappy for a long time especially for things I Cannot change. And it struck me in a blink that I Was Lacking GRATITUDE.
All the Harsh words my family told me, were surprisingly Correct! The moment I understood the most Crucial Thing lacking in me. And when I actually looked around, felt the blanket over me, could see around in the dark because I could afford the electricity bill, I could afford pay my rent and shelter myself from natural discomforts like Rain or storm.
I could afford all The groceries and gas facilities to cook it and eat Fresh food right our of the stove. I could afford applying ghee/butter to my chapati, It was when I began my journey of inner happiness and gradually developed the quality of a Giver. I became much more “Giving” when i realised I Have abundant.
Now, this does Not mean I was happy with all I have. No, these things weren’t enough YET!. I do wish to excel and grow to gather more and more wealth to live my best life. But How did Gratitude help me you ask?It not just kept me grounded throughout, but GRATITUDE AIDED MY GROWTH.
GRATITUDE was a Fuel to my Growth as I move upwards. The journey felt much lighter and more fun, and every step towards the Goal had Become ten times more valuable, because I kept being grateful for each and everything.Being Grateful, Helps you Better your relationships in ways you can never learn otherwise.Being grateful for giving and receiving Love, care and respect helps your give your best in nurturing yourself and your relationships with your loved ones.
How to Incorporate Gratitude Daily
Now, it is extremely crucial for us to sense gratitude and keep reminding ourselves to be grateful, so we can stay on track even with the waves of mood swings we get.
- Keeping a Gratitude Journal : One thing I would say is keeping a journal is a subjective thing, and even if you do keep one, it is difficult as human beings to stick to another routine in addition to the ones we already have, hence I would suggest to just keep one pocket book with you everytime, and a pen of course. And everytime you feel low, just scribble what bother you and reflect on it, see if it is solvable, see if you can do anything about the problem, If there is no solution and you need to deal with the situation and all ot demands is Patience? Then make the patience period easy by scribbling all things you are thank ful for. This would truly help you go through the hard time.
- Morning Gratitude Rituals: You can kickstart you day with a simply cup of your favourite coffee, water a plant, sit in sunshine, and take it slow. Fast mornings are the worst thing to do to your mental health. Waking up a little early could give you some time to breathe before you head for work. Give some time to God or sit by yourself and soak up some extra energy and then begin your day.
- Gratitude Throughout the Day: Now that you have gained all that positivity in the morning routine, the hardest task is maintaining the energy throughout the day, that’s because we meet many people with different Aura or energies and with different moods, that somewhere affects yours as well, so you remember the book we kept in our pocket? Yes! Take it out and scribble what you didn’t like about the particular situation that your feeling low about. Just this one practice will help you combat the negative feeling. And if your thinking that the negativity is so much that quitting the job would be the only option then you can go ahead and Read this article here before you quit. I have also written a blog about all things to know before career change and The truth about quitting your Job. Also an article here, about How I Overcame my Fear of quitting my Job. Hope it’s helpful.
- Daily Gratitude: All the Points we discussed would surely help you combat your feeling of anxiousness and negativity, but doing it daily would truly change your life. So, you can read the Science of forming a new Habit. Involve this particular practice of Gratitude in that list of habit formation and then it will not feel like a chore.
Creating Your Gratitude List
Examples of Gratitude List:
- My Grandparents
- Parents
- My comfort food that I cooked
- Good health
- My ability to earn My own livelihood
- books
- Good sleep
- A great Laugh
Personal Reflection: It is extremely important to reflect with ourselves to understand the value of the things we own that somebody else is praying for. Reflecting withing and realising how many of our Prayers have been already answered, thanking The universe for being generous and patient with you. Being Thankful to your family that has been with you in all the decisions you’ve taken, and the sacrifices they made for your comfort. One common myth here is, if we think so much about what we have our growth would shrink and we wouldn’t have enough drive to make things happen and achieve new heights because we are quite satisfied.
Well, you know it is quite the Opposite, We as humans will definitely work towards our goal No matter we are happy or sad in our current situation. It doesn’t stop us from achieving what is good for our career. But Being grateful in the journey makes it smoother and happier, because it is almost foolish to wait for a reason to settle and stay happy. Happiness isn’t in settlements, it is in the adventure and it’s rather important to make it positive as well.
